Several of my friends & readers have asked me this question… In fact "blog" was the number one searched word on webster.com in 2004, breaking all previous records–so if you don’t know what one is, a lot of people are in the same boat.
I like to say that blogs (along with blog feedreaders) are the solution to "too much email and not enough website" because you can send out quick updates and news without bombarding people with email. We all get way too much email, and there are too many websites to remember and take time to visit. So the in-between solution is the blog, which can be fed into a news aggregator for quick news and updates. So, yes it will save you time and keep you more informed, and that is why we should all check out blogs and feedreaders. More on that in a minute…
Rather than stumbling further through an answer to this frequently asked question of ‘what’s a blog’, I’m going to send you to Amy Gahran’s post on What’s A Blog? Bag The Stereotypes. She tells you exactly what a blog is and what it isn’t. Amy has her own very forward-looking and informative blog on communications in an online age–her blog is called Contentious, and it’s quite good, so clickity-click.
One other plug: Sign-up for a free subscription to bloglines.com. This is the blog feedreader/news aggregator I was telling you about. It’s the quickest and best way to scan all of your favorite blogs, including 100yearpicnic.com. (100yearpicnic.com is technically a blog, even though I’ve tried to make it look like a regular website. This way you can check updates through your bloglines feedreader.) Sounds techy and all but seriously it isn’t. Those of you that know me, know I’m not a tech wiz. I haven’t even programmed the vcr. (Lucky for me, they came out with dvds before I had to mess any of that.) So…if I can do it, you can do it. Checkout bloglines because it rocks. later…
